Biography & Aspirations
'Why' I plan |
My interests in planning started at a very young age and up until now I did not even realise. I often asked the question why? And often thought of improving our spaces we live in. Planning is not where my journey began. Living in Victoria as a low socioeconomic child in commission home living I often used our space as a playground even without grass. The closeness and similar situations we were all in made us a community.
Moving forward to living in a central Queensland mining town as a teenager often made me wonder why the town was built the way it was. How sport pulled the community together to improve its cohesion; and how the town sustained itself on the ebbs and flows of the mining sector having economic influences on the town. Now living in Brisbane and currently completing my degree in Urban and Environmental Planning I look back at my experiences and my thoughts and realise that this is the reason why planning found me. I realise that I aspire to provide socially connected ‘places’ and achievable frameworks and goals for the betterment of society. By consistently asking why I can start to understand how each town and each neighbourhood is different and has different drivers. Also why we plan and why we continually strive for the best outcomes. This e-portfolio is a snapshot into my planning degree and career. Please feel free to have a look, get inspired and feel free to contact me for more information. |
5 Year Plan
Now - Graduation (Mid year 2017)
Having only a limited amount of professional experience to add to my degree, my current goals are to continue to improve my industry contacts and continue building my professional network. I will continue to learn and be inspired by both domestic and international advances to move to more sustainable practices. As I am currently employed in local government working as a strategic planner I hope to continue gaining valuable professional experience before I graduate. Therefore allowing me to experience a few different areas of planning early in my career. |
Graduation (Mid year 2017) - 2019
After graduation I would have built a strong professional network and would have become confident in the areas I have been working on during my degree. I would be comfortable working in either public or private sector focusing on strategic planning and statutory planning. I would also like to gain some insight into Development Assessment. Before the end of this time I would like to have had some significant input into giving strategic direction to an area for a more positive future. |
2019 - 2021+
After 3 years I would like to hopefully be looking at a senior planners role. Or leading my own team on projects. I aim to be a go to person for strategic or statutory planning. As planning is a continually lifelong learning profession I would be looking at completing a masters degree to further enhance my abilities as a planner and to improve further growth and development in the planning sector. |
